Thunderstorm in Beirut

We had a thunderstorm last night in Beirut, and my friend Antoine from Adidap.com took this wonderful photo of Beirut from his balcony in Ain Saade during the storm.

The photo is stunning in my opinion and can be easily nominated the photo of the day on the Lebanese blogsphere! Sietske already blogged about it, and now it’s here on +961 😉

P.S: This photo is part of Antoine’s PAD project (Picture A Day), he’s taking a photo every day and publishing on his flickr account. you may check his complete collection by clicking here.

Beirut Flooding

Here is how it was like in Beirut last morning right after some heavy rainfall.

Beirut Flooding

It’s becoming more like an annual ritual here! The ministry of transport and public works is as usual unprepaed and obviously has been dealing with bad subcontractors.

But what’s different this time is that Ghazi Al-Aridi (the minister) claimed that’s he’s ready to resign because of today’s foods. Now although there’s HUGE difference between his readiness to resign and actually doing it, but let’s see!

Laser over Beirut

Have you noticed this laser light over Beirut recently?

This light originates from Moahammad Al Amine mosque in downtown Beirut.  I assume it points to the Kaabah (located in Mecca KSA) that muslims face during their prayer no matter where they are on earth.

Gas price in Lebanon

As per this article, gas price in Lebanon should drop by 1,500 L.L on Wednesday morning! That means we will be paying 22,800 L.L (~$15) for 20 liters.

Pretty good no?

I wonder though if the price of goods will decrease as well now that the gas price is decreasing worldwide.

Lebanese bloggers on facebook

Following the creation of a fan page for +961, I have created a group for Lebanese Bloggers on Facebook. The aim of that group is to gather Lebanese Bloggers to get to know each other.

I’m definitely interested in getting to know more Lebanese blogs out there, I already have few in my RSS reader but I’m sure there are still a lot more.

So far the group has 4 member, Antoine Khater from Adidap.com, Mireille Raad from LifeGeeked.com, Farah Soubra from NoisyThinking.com, and… myself!

Care to join? http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=44733691275

Fire in the Chouf

Very huge areas of the Chouf forests have been on fire since yesterday night… and it’s quite obvious it isn’t due to high temperature but because of unknown people who want to get woods for the winter. I don’t understand how irresponsible people can be sometimes, it’s frustrating.

For those who have not been to Chouf before, I’m posting a photo I’ve taken early in March in Baakline, it will show you what is it like there and what we might be losing, god forbids.

I hope for those who are setting the fire on, shi nhar twalli3 fiyon!

No more Beirut Marina

I was driving near the Beirut Marina today when I noticed new concrete blocks placed on the sidewalk.

I drove further to find the same concrete blocks supporting metal rods.

Now if you take a look at the inside of the marina , you will notice that these block and rods are meant to form a visual block (as in the photo below) to PREVENT people from watching the sea and the parked yachts.

Very soon, the Beirut Marina will be pretty much like the Movenpick and Riviera, where the sea view is blocked for the public just because they own the land on the seaside.

Anyway, it’s Solidaire’s time now! Bravo! After stealing the center of Beirut now they’re stealing the sea view from the Beirutis.

I know there’s still the rest of the corniche, but still, fuck whoever came up with that idea, they do NOT have the right to do it.

Alain Robert in Beirut

Alain Robert

After climbing more than 70 of the world’s tallest structures, Alain Robert aka spiderman arrived to Beirut to climb the Phoenicia Intercontinental hotel tower using his bare hand without ropes!

The event was set today at 6:00PM and I heard about it by chance on Mix FM. I thought it would be cool to go and shoot some photos of spiderman but unfortunately I was wrong… As soon as I arrived in my car near the Phoenicia at around 6:10, I found hundreds of cars stuck in a traffic jam on the road passing by the Phoenicia and leading to Saint George.

Reason? Not because there was too many people, but apprently the internal security forces have blocked the road and stopped cars from proceeding towards Ain El-Mrayyseh. I didn’t understand why they did that especially that Alain Robert was climbing a tower that is far away from the road….

I was also surprised by how the ISF took actions to make that event a success! As I know, in almost every other country the cops arrest Alain after he does his stunts because it is so unsafe… Check this wikipedia page and see for yourself. The ISF here were actually amused by what he did.

Anyway, at the end after being stuck for more than an hour in that traffic jam without even facing the building he was climbing, I returned back with no photos…

Update: Thanks to Dona, now I’m posting 2 videos of the event.
