Bachir Gemayel memorial

Bachir-gemayel

It’s been 27 years now since Bachir Gemayel has been assassinated, and every year I can’t help but wonder what could have happened if Bachir lived and remained as a president for Lebanon..?

Israel wouldn’t have invaded Lebanon, the Lebanese civil war could have ended earlier than 1990, a Beirut – Tel Aviv highway could have been created (similar to Beirut – Damascus highway!)… and for some reason Rafic Hariri could have lived!

What do you think?

    What do you mean “Israel wouldn’t have invaded Lebanon” ???

    Israel invaded Lebanon BEFORE Bachir’s assasination and with the complicity of Bachir. It was the bloody invasion that forced MPs to elect Bachir.

    Stop idolizing militia leaders of yesterday, learn from their mistakes and try to build a better future

    Another fanatic and criminal figure but he was the president of Lebanon who was assassinated same thing goes for the corrupted Rafic Hariri who robbed the country and bought Beirut.

    @Salim
    Excuse me for incorrectly expressing myself, I was referring to the events that followed Bachir’s assassination, e.g. Sabra & Shatila.
    This post is not to idolize Bachir, I’m just saying that his assassination made a big turn of events in the Lebanese civil war, as Hariri’s assassination did in 2005.

    @Dany moussa
    Once again, I’m not praising neither Bachir here, nor Rafic Hariri.

    Rami,

    I don’t want to criticize your opinions. But, I have my opinion to share: the Lebanese civil war could have worsened and went on for longer than 1990, a Beirut – Tel Aviv highway could have been created (similar to Beirut – Damascus highway!)and could have encouraged hostilities within the Lebanese partisan society and had not served any good for Lebanon… and Rafic Hariri could have died all the same!

    And maybe his assassination was good for the country after all.

    My opinion is that Gemayel’s death shouldn’t be commemorated the way it is because he simply is a war criminal. But then again our whole country is still being run by war lords.

    You can have symetric thaughts with people that were not killed! One of my favorites is about Ayatollah Khomeini in the late seventies, killed by some intelligence agency in his french asylum of Naufles le Chateau.

    Bashir Gemayel was forced into war, his family comes a deeply rooted intellectual family that truly served the people. Founding of LBC, Libraries and institutions. We usally forget these and focus on the Palestinian cause/problem.

    I wonder if any of the ones who commented in a negative way knew Bachir and what he did. Rather than make ignorant remarks, maybe you should spend some time to get to know about him and listen to what he said.

    looooooooool, this is hilarious 😀
    this is like saying that hitler did lots of great things for germany, but poor thing, we tend to only focus on the genocides he made and the concentration camps.
    loooool, some people are really hilarious, it explains a lot about how these fanatic warlords have people supporting them 😛

    and yeah sniper, ignorant remark, bashir was a saint. saying otherwise is very ignorant. what a smart comment from you…

    Without the Arab’s intervention, we could have kicked the palestinians out in ’73 and there would have been no civil war and the death and destruction it left. Neither the Israelis not the Syrians would have raped the land. Israel did not attack us in its wars with our neighbors when the palestinians weren’t firing from here.

    En 1982, Bachir Gemayel parlant de Rafic Hariri: « Il a peut-être construit quelque chose à Saida (comme l’université Libanaise) mais il ne coopérera probablement pas à la destruction des camps. Hier, un de ses directeurs m’a appelé pour me demander de faire évacuer l’hôpital que nous occupons à Kfar Falouss, au-dessus de Saida. Je lui ai répondu que nous allions racheter toutes les terres des chrétiens qu’il a acquises avec des fonds saoudiens. Son projet est de tout acheter jusqu’à Jezzine. Il essaye de faire de Saida un centre financier et économique de premier ordre.(…). Il est dangereux. Il a beaucoup d’argent saoudien à sa disposition ».

    Better picture who’s the bad guy here?

    Being born in 1996, and having little knowledge about who Bachir Gemayel was… I can only hear stories from my family and do my own research about his statue back in 1970s… First, I found him as a ruthless political figure that created this unnecessary hatred that you still find in 2020 between Christians and Muslims and Lebanese and Palestinians… Which indeed can not have a place in Lebanon because we are a multi-cultural country and acceptance should have been built between people instead of creating massacres and lots of bloodbath and agony… I think he was similar to hitler by creating lots of crimes against humanity…

    Some people say that he came at a time back in 1970s whereby lots of foreign power was dominating in Lebanon and using machine guns in the capital… Which I believe shouldn’t have happened and Palestinian President Arafat holds responsibility for all of this… But at the same time it is unjustified to exterminate the Palestinians the way he did… He could have worked peacefully to send them to another host country instead of killing them ruthlessly…

    I wish that Bachir Gemayel came in 2020 instead, new era, to come and step up and do the change by unifying Lebanon “his dream” but peacefully!!

    Still, Bachir Gemayel, is one of the most interesting political figures that I regret losing and wish he could have given the chance to prove that he can be a good leader and not only a war criminal…

    Do I love him? Hate him? I don’t know… I believe that there is a part two of the story that nobody heard… A different Bachir Gemayel
