What we might be missing about the new 7 wonders

Everyone and their mother is now calling to vote for Jeita to make it among the new 7 wonders of the world, and even celebrities and politicians are getting involved in the voting campaigns.

But we might be missing something here. Let me assume we did manage to secure the needed votes and made a new wonder out of Jeita Grotto, will people around the globe be aware of the new list? And most importantly, will they find it credible enough coming from an organization who has been accused of running scam campaigns (you can just Google it), and having no affiliation with the UNESCO?

And again, assuming we won, the news will make it to the culture page of several international newspapers, but people are most probably going to perceive that article the same way they perceive any other travel and tourism article. And the most genuine list will forever remain the list of  7 wonders of the ancient world, at least to me!

And in case you didn’t know it, we’re currently competing to make it into the list of 7 wonders of nature. Another 7 wonders were elected back in 2007, were you aware of it? (Regardless of the popularity of the chosen places)

So what do you think? Are we overrating that competition?

The Lebanese desperately need to rally behind something commonly as Lebanese.

What’s so bad about us rallying behind some limestone freak of nature?

As if we’re capable of “naturally” selecting a national football squad for us all to rally behind.

Limestone is good. It’s hard to call it FPM, FM, HA, Amal, or whatever other idiotic “natural” resource we have in abundance of here.

And … let’s see the Israelis claim they “invented” it!

As for the 7 “man made” wonders of the world …

New York always blows my mind. Ever walked around Paris? Not sure why Machu Picchu and the Pyramids are still the “mystical” man made wonders of the world? Ever been to Dubai and seen what can be built in 7 years?

And while I’m on my cynical trip …

Why would anyone want to celebrate these “great man made structures” that obviously were constructed through severe brutality and absolute savage use of human beings?

What exactly are they monuments of?

    Genius?

The most important thing is that we are always caring to limit the wonders to 7 while we can have 15 wonder or 150 wonder all around the world and also tourists will be excited to visit all of them.
You are right regarding the credibility of the organization behind this competition. Moreover what is the cultural level of the voters?

“Eventually, the concept evolved to a ridiculous “open source” contests, where the visitors contribute to the competition creation as well as the voting under “vote 7 campaigns”.

I wrote this back in April 2010

It might be a scam, but I still think it’s good advertising for Lebanon, just consider all the people waiting to see the final results, that alone, you can consider an awareness campaign for Jeita.

    …and a new post about the n7w here http://www.marketinginlebanon.com/2011/10/change-world-please.html

    Cheers,
