Real list of Lebanese establishments fined for food safety

LBCI published today a list of Lebanese supermarkets and restaurants that were fined for dealing with expired and rotten food.

The only name I was shocked to see making such list is Kababji, I mean that’s the least you expect when you pay 7,000L.L for a tinly sandwich of grilled meat!

Although this list dates back to 2011, I’m guessing it might relate a bit to the recently confiscated amounts of rotten meat by the authorities, but unfortunately it is limited to the Metn area only (assuming by the header of the document).

What’s surprising though is how low the fines are, notice how some of them were reduced from 25,000,000L.L to 500,000L.L, even for big names like TSC.

I find a few things very weird:

    1. Why is it mainly in metn? we all know how many dirty restaurants exist all over lebanon, so why only talk about the ones in metn???

    2. The first list includes a “mhattit benzin “…which i find very weird, and which makes me think about the reason why the people in the first list have been accused…maybe they have been fined for reasons not related to food safety. The first list doesn’t mention the reason while the one related to beirut mentions it.

I totally agree on your comment point 2
And would like to add a question :
      a) why every problem come from metn area
      b) why nobody is talking of HARET HREYK and the similar ears in Lebanon and so on
Reply to point b) is only because the law is not allowed to enter into these ears
      Why why why

      Rita,

As you may have noticed, the source of this document is “a7kam jaza2 al maten”, that’s why it is limited to restaurants/supermarkets in the Metn area only.
As for the mentioned gas station, you know some of them have small mini-markets, and it’s possible that this one was dealing with expired good, and thus got fined.

I’m surprised anyone is getting fined. From what I understood is the supplier of the meat was cheating their clients. I doubt Kebabji, TSC or anyone else knew they were getting expired meat.

    • GABRIREL MITRI March 17, 2012 at 4:16 pm #

Please do not be surprised and it is not only the supplier problem and fault
This problem must go also on the head and shoulder of the purchaser in this food industry and our ministry of health and environment who allowed such things
And how can it be possible for a for restaurant or hotels purchase to purchase this bad quality Such quality of meet?? if it is not corrupted
They do not know there job as food purchaser? They do not have any quality control to re control if the meet they are purchasing i good or not???
so please do not say the supplier of the meat was cheating their clients.
It is the meet client who agree to purchase this such meet quality for multiple reason
In Lebanon we need to implement a real purchasing food quality control
All are agree to purchases low grade meet quality at a good price and think after cooking this will not affect the consumer health or the consumer will never know the difference because it is cooked or decorated…………..

i know the incident at Kababji.
the story is a few grams of Labne one day over the posted date for an employee that makes a personal sandwich out of it.

Even if the fine is not enough…these restaurants will loose a great part of their costumers

    • GABRIREL MITRI March 17, 2012 at 4:25 pm #

We all consumers do not care only to go into a very good looking restaurant but we are looking to eat healthy, clean and hygienic meals
All restaurants are putting all there installation expenses on the decoration and forget the real important point hygienic meals , hygienic kitchens

I would like to thank the Ministry of the Consumer who has been doing a great job lately, catching and exposing all the restaurants, hotels, and even supermarkets that are selling bad meat. It is indeed a tremendous job. But, if i may suggest and even ask from the Ministry to expand its control to the kitchens and personnel who work in such fields, to really secure the consumer’s health. i.e. The chefs, the chef’s assistants, the dish washers, or whoever has got something to do with the food industry. Not only that, but also the main kitchens SHOULD be fully equipped according to the Food & Beverage Kitchen Standard Hygienic constructions. And this control should be done on weekly basis NOT once a year or every 6 months. Please go and have a look on the bran new project built in the center of Beirut named “Zaitounay Bay”. And in other location in all Lebanon to look inside their kitchens, and so on…..
In a Bay all logically must ne Environmental friendly but there it is also an additional environment problem which will not allowed tourist or normal healthy peoples to cone in restaurant , Bubs , public area in Lebanon [ smoking and nonsmoking areas are mix ] and for a Bay which is very close to the see water is this not allowed Smokers are killing nonsmokers given to them a direct access to the CANCER and others dieses …….!!!????

No smoking areas + Hygienic clean environment + Hygienic Kitchen Standard = less visit to the doctors & hospitals ,better health = the right way to go GREEN for Lebanon

Regarding all poultry farms and industry, i could advise real controllers to check the real quality of poultry feed meals and its composition because many of them are using the slaughter houses waste ( offal , fathers and blood ) not well treated as animal food proteins, and mixed into the chicken meals,[ chicken are still eating chicken which is not allowed into the animal meal health regulations ]
Furthermore, to reduce their expenses, some or many of the poultry farms put a fat substance made out of the raw engine oil waste, in the meals.
Instead of using the natural fat from the soya beans or others which is much healthier for Poultry and others animals meals , then good for human to consume this chicken without being contaminate by the bad fat mixed in the poultry feed meals .
We need to reduce up to 0% the poultry waste going directly into our see water or into our underground pipe network by implementing Poultry Hygienic clean slaughter house under the international slaughter house rules and regulations on site for each poultry slaughter house .
And where all the waste coming from these poultry Slaughter Houses are collected and treated by product ( by type ) in an Poultry RENDERING plant under the international RENDERING rules and regulations to produce the best animal protein to be sold into the international protein market ( Poultry offal’s have 98% of very good protein , Poultry offal’s give you the best quality of animal fat to produce the best Bio diesel B85 could be sold to USA for their Bio fuel plant where they produce the B52 air force plane fuel AND CAN BE USED INTO THE RENDERING POWER PLANT AS BIO FUEL INSTADE OF PURCHASSING LOCAL DIESEL , Poultry fathers have 87% of very good protein , Blood Protein have 98% of very good protein ) and can be sold between $750 to $1000 / ton by product in the international protein market
    The rendering

Regarding our Lebanese Read Meet Slaughter Houses I could advise real controller’s “ must be Veterinary Doctors” to Macke a regular medical control visit to each ranch for a real good follow up on the animal health before given the certificate who authorize each animal to be slough
But in a Hygienic clean slaughter house under the international slaughter house rules and regulations.
And where all the waste coming from these Read Meet Slaughter Houses are collected and treated by product ( by type ) in an read meet RENDERING plant under the international RENDERING rules and regulations to produce the best animal protein to be sold into the international protein market ( Blood Protein , offal’s protein , Skin & Bones give you the best quality of Gelatin ) WASTE READ MEET & READ MEED offal’s give you the best quality of animal fat to produce the best Bio diesel B85 could be sold to USA for their Bio fuel plant where they produce the B52 air force plane fuel AND CAN BE USED INTO THE RENDERING POWER PLANT AS BIO FUEL INSTADE OF PURCHASSING LOCAL DIESEL.

This is what we all called Green Environment
Think GREEN for a Green Lebanon

Bellow you can read the comment of a very good and full of sense restaurant Manager Mr Hadi Boustany he owner of Braai restaurant

No body must blame only the suppliers BUT ALSO (owner, purchasing manager, and chef) have also huge responsibility to make quality control for all products they purchase

    Braai Restaurant & Lounge
Dear Gaby, I (the owner of Braai restaurant, Hadi Boustany) totaly agree and like all the points you have mentioned in your comment . Unfortunately in Lebanon people follow the crowd in restaurants and in politics few who care about the quality. We follow the trend, now its Zautouna Bay trend whatever they offer us its delicious and hygenic. Unfortunately most of our loyal customers are foreigners since they care about the quality not the crowd. As you said we should not blame only the suppliers we (owner, purchasing manager, and chef)have also huge responsibility to make quality control for all our products and we are doing our job. Hope one day we can meet you in Braai and make a tour with u in our kitchen , restaurant and lounge to benefit from your expertise.

Kababji has nothing to do with the current issue of sold damaged meat / goods. the meat at Kababji is baby veal tenderloin, one of the expensive meat worldwide. the sandwich is not tiny, it is a 30 cm sandwich.
the decree that was taken against Kababji in 2010 was related to an expired amount of Labneh that was kept by one of the employees for his personal use. so listing Kababji among the Restaurants / hotels that have been using damaged meat / goods is quite unfair as it is not the case whatsoever. it is worth mentionning that Kababji has been in the market for many many years and did not encounter not even one incident related to quality, hygeine or health.

WOW – no one can read! This is from 2011!!!!! NOTHING to do with the meat ‘scandal’!

Lebanon needs to have a restaurant rating system like California. Where the restaurant is required by law to post their rating! A, B, C, etc. One day old Labneh would still allow you to have an A rating, btw! Why must Lebanon try to re-invent the wheel all the time – just COPY from somewhere else like the students at University do with their textbooks and term papers!!! Follow the California restaurant guide and be done with it!

Next we fix pollution from cars – requiring a sticker on the car stating that it passed an exhaust and working order check for lights and seatbelts! Just needs implementation! AND fighting against the corrupt ways of people to buy their way out of it!
