Tannoura Maxi – Heels of War

Tannoura Maxi is a new Lebanese movie that debuted in theaters yesterday, and tells the story of a priest about to be ordained but falls in love of a high-heeled girl.

Regardless how good this movie might be, it is yet another Lebanese movie with a story taking place during the war, and I guess people are fed up with this repetitive pattern in Lebanese movies. I mean we’ve enjoyed the first few ones likeĀ West Beirut, but the topic has been used and abused! Wouldn’t you prefer to watch Lebanese movies of other genre?

Please. I would watching anything except for two things: West Beirut, and a Nadine Labaki film.

Actually, I could tolerate West Beirut – but you want to punish me? Make me sit and watch a film by Nadine Labaki.

The movie isn’t even about the war. It happens during the war, but the story is not about it. Remember it’s a true story so they can’t just remove the war from the movie.

Horrible won’t even describe the movie…I saw it this Thursday and couldn’t stay until the end. Many people got out way before the end too. There is no dialogue, no story structure, the acting is pretty bad and some of the scenes are quite disturbing (with some chicken slaughtering involved…) I never in my life cut a movie short but this one was way waaaaay too boring and stupid. Torture!

I wouldn’t say used and abused. Maybe abused due to lack of good movies but the whole civil war subject needs to be addressed in Lebanon. We have not reconciled with that as a society and we need to. Movies do that. The Lebanese civil war and it’s repercussions remain a taboo subject in Lebanon and that’s not good in terms of us moving forward as a society and learning our lessons from that.
