Crocodiles spotted in Beirut river

Crocodiles in Beirut river

According to this article in Al-Joumhouria, at least three crocodiles were spotted in Beirut river near Karantina after someone dumped them there. After checking with a veterinarian, it turned out these are actually Nile crocodiles, a specie that is quite dangerous (do there exist safe ones?).

Both ministries of environment and agriculture were unfortunately unaware of this story, and I guess the crocodiles will  most probably die on their own before these ministries decide to take any action. So for the time being, Animals Lebanon will be working on catching them and returning them back to Africa.

You can read the full article here.

Update:

Below is a video showing one of the crocodiles in Beirut river.

Maxime Chaya’s new adventure: Rowing the Indian Ocean

maxime chaya

After completing the seven summits project in 2006 and the three poles challenge in 2009, Maxime Chaya is up for a new adventure in around 3 months from now, rowing the Indian Ocean.

Maxime’s journey will start in Western Australia and ends Mauritius off the east coast of Africa. And once the boat he’s boarding departs, there will be no way to turn back since the wind at that time will prevent it from doing so.

You can check all about this new adventure on this website RowingTheIndianOcean.com.

African Rhinoceros attacks minister Sehnaoui

Nicolas Sehnaoui

Minister Nicolas Sehnaoui was lucky enough to escape a Rhinoceros attack while he was on a hunting trip in Africa along with minister Marwan Kheireddine.

Caretaker State Minister Marwan Kheireddine saved caretaker Telecommunications Minister Nicolas Sehnaoui from a rhinoceros attack while they were in Africa, reported An Nahar daily Friday.

It said that as the ministers were on a hunting trip in Africa, Sehnaoui decided to rest by the rhinoceros, which he mistook for a rock.

The animal soon turned its attention to Sehnaoui and attempted to attack him.

The minister began to run away from the rhinoceros, while Kheireddine and their companions scared off the animal with their sticks. Source

I wonder what other cool hobbies do our ministers have!

Beirut has 36th most expensive retail rent in the world

It isn’t surprising anymore to read about Beirut being ranked among the most expensive cities in the world.

The 2012 survey of the world’s most expensive retail rental locations by property consultants Cushman & Wakefield ranked Beirut as the 36th most expensive city among 62 cities worldwide, the second most expensive city among seven cities in the Middle East & Africa region, and the most expensive among five Arab cities. Source

It’s interesting though that the report lists the retail rent per location in Beirut compared to other places in the region.

The ABC Achrafieh ranked as the third most expensive location in the region at $2,000/month, followed by Kaslik Street in 10th place at $1,500/month, Verdun Street in 12th place at $1,400/month, the Beirut Central District in13th place at $1,200/month, and Hamra Street in 19th place at $850/month. (All figures are as at June 2012)
