McDonald’s Is Releasing MacCoins for The Big Mac 50th Anniversary

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Big Mac, McDonald’s is releasing their own currency called “Mac Coins” in more than 50 countries around the world including Lebanon.

As of August 2nd, people around the world started getting a MacCoin with every purchase of a Big Mac burger, and that coin can then be used to get another Big Mac for free at any participating McDonald’s outlet in the world until the end of 2018. I’ve read online that more than 6 million MacCoins will be given away and you can start getting them in Lebanon as of August 9th.

According to USA Today, the commemorative coins will come in 5 different designs, each one representing one of the decades since the Big Mac has been sold.

The ‘70s: Showcasing the decade’s flower power

The ‘80s: Alluding to pop art

The ‘90s: Defined by bold, abstract shapes

The early ‘00s: Specifically focusing on the technology that was at the forefront of the turn of the century

The ‘10s: MacCoin calling attention to the evolution of communication

I usually like to try McDonald’s when I’m abroad to see if they serve any special edition burgers at the country I’m visiting, but the Big Mac remains one of my favorite items on their menu along with the Big Tasty, and I’ll personally make sure to collect all the 5 coins as soon as they’re available in Lebanon not to exchange them for free meals but to keep them as a souvenirs for the future!

Remembering the Lebanese Civil War Day by Day

Today marks the 41st anniversary of the Lebanese civil war which lasted 15 years from 1975 to 1990 resulting in 150,000 people killed and thousands of disappeared.

On this occasion I thought it would be good to share with you an interesting group on Facebook called “La guerre du Liban au jour le jour” where Georges Boustany and Kheireddine El-Ahdab share on a daily basis old videos, images, and news articles from war time to recollect both major and tiny events that happened during those 15 years.

I highly recommend you join the group not only to learn more about the Lebanese civil war but also because Georges and Kheireddine sometimes shares rare videos that were not shown in the released war documentaries so far. I once saw a video showing the neighborhood we used to live in during the 1980s, so you never know what’s in it for you!

AUB 150th Anniversary

american university of beirut

This year marks 150 years since the establishment of The American University of Beirut in 1866.

AUB is by far the oldest university in Lebanon and has to some extent played a role in shaping the history of Beirut by influencing the culture of the surrounding area in Hamra and making it a meeting place for avant-garde thinking and revolutionaries during the 60s and 70s.

I have always admired their campus which is in my opinion the most beautiful one among other Lebanese universities, and a stroll in their green areas always feels like an escape from Beirut’s polluted atmosphere.

To celebrate their 150th anniversary, AUB built a dedicated website http://150.aub.edu.lb that has their calendar of events throughout the year, in addition to a history timeline highlighting their milestones and accomplishments, and a cool page sharing the stories of couple that have met at AUB.

I highly recommend you check out the website for some bits of history and interesting old photos of the university.

Roadster Diner launching a new burger: Route 66

To celebrate their 15th anniversary, it came to my knowledge that Roadster Diner will be launching a new burger called Route 66. So I asked the cool people at Roadster about it and was informed it will be made out of 250g of American prime beef, lettuce, melted cheddar cheese, sweet red onion, fresh tomato, pickles, and the new R 66 sauce.

I also got the below photo of it (click to enlarge) which shows that Route 66 will be served with the usual coleslaw salad, in addition to crunchy potato dipper and a sour herbs special dip for a change.

I personally haven’t had a burger since Ramadan started, and the Route 66 seems like a good one to have after Eid!
