Simit Sarayi is Opening in Lebanon

I was at the Spot Choueifat last night when I noticed that Simit Sarayi is set to soon open there on the ground floor. I’m sure those who have been to Istanbul are familiar with the place, but for those who are not, Simit Sarayi is basically a chain of coffee shops / bakeries best known for their simit (circular bread similar to bagels encrusted with sesame seeds).

Wherever you go around Istanbul you are guaranteed to stumble upon one of its branches, so it is more like a Turkish version of Starbucks. Their prices are a bit higher than other places and street simit vendors though, but from my experience the service and the pastries freshness were always well worth it.

The only other place in Beirut that serves simit is a Turkish restaurant in Hamra called Mado but they never serve them fresh, so I hope Simit Sarayi commit to better quality standards.

On a side note I’m personally finding it a bit weird for F&B companies to launch some of their brands from the Spot Choueifat. The mall doesn’t have an ideal location and driving to it is not really a pleasant experience especially at night. Still, IHOP opened last week and now Simit Sarayi is expected to do so anytime soon…

Update:

A friend told me they are also opening soon at Citymall Dora.

Best man’oushe in town

Mankouche_NoGarlicNoOnions_Beirut1

If you’re not following No Garlic No Onions blog by Anthony Rahayel then you must be missing a lot. The blog features very interesting and detailed reviews of Lebanese and international restaurants and hotels, with tens of photos accompanying each experience.

Among some of the cool ideas he’s been recently coming up with lately is a quest to find the best man’ouche in town, which consisted of visiting several types of bakeries, the upscale, the dirty, and your regular neighborhood bakery to find the best among them. Read all about it here.

I know the winner in Anthony’s post might not have the ultimate man’oushe in Beirut since it’s practically impossible to visit every single bakery in the city, but you’ll at least get to learn how to judge a good man’oushe.

Magnolia Bakery opening at ABC Dbayeh

I just learned Magnolia Bakery will be opening at ABC Dbayeh on Thursday December 6th. I actually first heard about Magnolia from friends who live abroad, and I know they’re pretty famous for their delicious cupcakes.

Magnolia first opened in New York and became famous for their dessert treats before expanding into other cities, and two years ago they opened their first non-US branch in Dubai.

Ichkhanian bakery

I’ve heard of “the Armenian lady” who makes great Lahme Baajin at Zokak El Blat since ever, but I never bothered checking her bakery out until last weekend and finally knew what was I missing, a lot!

People probably call her “the Armenian lady” because there isn’t lot of Armenian shops in western Beirut, while her bakery is in fact called “Ichkhanian” (by the family name of her late husband) and has been operating since before the civil war.

The Lahme Baajin you’ll find there are just awesome and could be the best in Beirut, the dough is so thin and the meat has a unique taste especially if you ask for the extra spicy mix. Perfect for a quick bite anytime a day.

The bakery also caters Manti, Shish Barak, and Borek at relatively reasonable prices, and I heard they’re great as well.

One thing you should be aware of is the bad temper that Mrs. Ichkhanian sometimes shows, she’s actually  a very nice lady but for some reason seems furious all the time. Still, the food is totally worth it.

Here’s a map showing where the bakery is exactly located and how you can reach it.
