Beiruti breakfast among the best around the world

Arabic breakfast.

“Al Soussi”, a small shop in Zaidaniyyeh offering traditional Lebanese dishes such as Foul, Hummus, Balila, and Fatte, was featured on CNN and Travel + Leisure list of top 100 places to eat like a local.

For more than 50 years, this pint-size kitchen in West Beirut has been serving an irresistible version of fatteh, made with layers of toasted pita, chickpeas, yogurt, and pine nuts. 961-1/312-145. Source

The place is quite popular in Zaydaniyyeh and Asiha Bakkar that you sometimes can’t set a foot inside the small shop due to the number of people waiting for their orders, especially in Ramadan at suhour time.

A roundup of unexpected brunch places in Beirut

Lorena from “If the bag fits” blog put together a nice post about some places around Beirut that people probably never knew they would be serving brunch. Make sure to check it out here.

My favorite brunch place is so far Paul Gemmayze, but I’m willing to try the ones recommended by Lorena as I’ve never been to any of them except for Bread Republic.

Meshtah Dagher – Haret Sakhr

This small kiosk called “Meshtah Dagher” on Haret Sakhr main road has some really great Saj Manakish. For some reason the guy there (Charbel) refers to them as “Meshtah”, which to my knowledge is a kind of bread, while in fact the Manakish he makes are actually called “Mashrouha”. Anyway whatever they’re called, they just taste great!

Charbel is pretty generous with the ingredients, be it zaatar, cheese, or keshk, while the dough is thin and light, the kind that doesn’t make you feel stuffed when you’re done. Definitely worth a try when you’re passing by on a morning.

Breakfast at Bonheur du Pain Verdun

Bonheur du pain is located in Verdun’s main street right next to Leila. Their breakfast menu is basically very close to what Paul offers but at a less price.

The cheese omelet I had was very good, but if there’s one thing I could improve it would have been their croissant, which are really not bad, but you usually expect pastries to taste no less than excellent at places like Bonheur du Pain.

My overall experience there was good even though their staff were acting clumsy… which is probably because my visit was shortly after their opening…
