Should Uber Be Blamed For Rebecca Dykes Murder?

I kept following the news and what people wrote on blogs and social media over the last few days about the murder of Rebecca Dykes on Friday night, and I found it quite astonishing how almost everybody was steering the conversation from Uber’s lack of responsibility to blaming the murder on our sexist culture.

I do acknowledge that we have a problem in our Lebanese society. Some women are exposed to domestic violence, others suffer from sexual harassment… but whether you like it or not this is unfortunately part of life and nothing is going to change overnight, just like you can’t expect gun violence to suddenly end in the US. Small progress however is being made thanks to the efforts of NGOs like Abaad and Kafa for example.

Still, the problem with the case of Rebecca Dykes doesn’t only lie in our culture which looks down on women, but also in the fact that Uber massively fucked up by allowing a driver with a criminal record to join their platform while people usually opt to use their service to feel in safer hands.

According to Uber’s webite, a clean Judicial Record is a minimum requirements for those who want to drive for them. Therefore, this incident could have been avoided if someone did their job right by rejecting this driver from getting on board… And to make things worse, they didn’t even issue a public statement to at least condemn the crime or apologize for the violation they did. On the other hand, when you visit their Facebook page, you ironically get greeted by an image with the tag line “Cheers to Safer Nightlife”. RIGHT!!!

Uber also had a similar problem in UK earlier this year by the way and were stripped of their licence in London for failure to report criminal offenses and lack of performing driver background checks. So it’s only logical to hold them accountable for doing the same here as well, in hope of at least getting a straight explanation about what went wrong on their side.

Update:

Uber reached out to me to give their side and below is what they wrote:

“All drivers that use the Uber app in Lebanon are fully licensed by the government and must have a clear judicial record.“ – Uber spokesperson

  • We can confirm that the driver arrested for this horrific attack had a clean background check and all the correct government permits.
  • We are in close contact with the authorities and we’re assisting their investigation in any way we can.

Man Shot in Tripoli for Adding Another Man’s Wife on Facebook

Now that it’s almost taken for granted that road rage incidents get you killed on our very safe roads in Lebanon. Another thing you should probably beware of is adding people on Facebook!

This is actually the kind of things you expect to see on satire news websites but it really happened. A man in Tripoli was angered last night when his wife accepted a friend request from another man on Facebook, and since we’re all known for solving things in a civilized way, he simply went on to shoot that man in the thigh! (Source)

So yeah, be careful next time you add someone on Facebook…

The Authorities Just Noticed Amhaz, Sa7 El Nom!

Amhaz

The owner of Amhaz cell shops, Kamel Amhaz, was arrested two days ago for illegaly smuggling more than 1.5 million phones with an approximate value of $45 million since the year 2000. And just like everytime a significant figure is put behind bars, some supporters blocked some roads near Beirut airport and in Baalbeck to protest his arrest.

However, while the protests are justified at a time where people hit the streets for the silliest reasons, the timing of the arrest is totally unacceptable. I know it’s always better late than never, but how on earth can the authorities wait more than 16 years to arrest such guy while everybody knew everything about his illegal business during the past years! Hell even I wrote a couple of times about getting smartphones from his shops. And it isn’t like Amhaz was operating from secret places, his shops are well know and one of them is even at a mall in Beirut.

Seriously, how can you brag about such accomplishment in the media and not lose credibility?!

On a lighter note, I wish getting people in jail was a simple as writing about them!

We need a second Adel Shehab

Ersal

Following the news about the three Lebanese soldiers who were killed in Ersal yesterday morning, a story from 1958 involving the late army commander Adel Shehab started making rounds on Facebook.

Back when General Adel Shehab was in charge, some gangsters killed lieutenant Benoit Barakat while he was on duty in Ersal. So Adel Shehab responded  by granting the villagers one hour for them to surrender their guns and hand him the criminals. Three hours later, when the people of Ersal didn’t do anything, the General ordered warplanes to start bombarding the village for several hours until all criminals surrendered themselves.

This isn’t the first time for the people of Ersal to kill soldiers who vowed to protect their village and the whole country, and there’s definitely no guarantee that they won’t do it one more time, so what’s holding General Kahwaji from doing the same as Adel Shehab did in the 1950’s?

Kidnapping is the new profitable business in Lebanon

mokdad clan

Check out this interesting report in Al-Safir today about the recent kidnapping incidents that happened over the last year in Lebanon. So far, the responsible groups for these kidnappings were able to collect more than $16 million out of 19 operations, moreover one gangster is even coordinating these operations from inside Roumieh Prison where he’s arrested!

And it doesn’t seem like kidnapping for ransom is going to stop anytime soon, due to the fact that the kidnappers belong to well known large crime families in Bekaa, so arresting few members will not eventually put an end to the whole thing. In addition, these groups just seem to have a strong appetite for making big money.

A friend of mine sent me the below video today showing how the army officer, Rayan Zayan Al Jourdi, was shot during BLOM Bank robbery a few days ago in Elissar.

I wish that officer a fast recovery and I hope for those two criminals to be caught soon so that they rot in jail!

Update:

I was asked to remove the video by the Captain’s immediate family. I apologize for any offence I have caused.
