The Day Batman Came to Beirut

I was on Reddit the other day when I landed on a thread about an issue of Batman from the 80s titled “A death in the Family” in which Batman pursues the Joker all the way to Beirut and the Bekaa valley!

The story is full of misconceptions about the Lebanese people and relates a lot to the politics back then (and unsurprisingly now as well). In the comic book, Batman and Robin go to Beirut and cooperates with a Mossad agent named Sharmin Rosen in order to stop the Joker from selling a nuclear missile to a “Shiia” terrorist group who intends to use it against Israel. They eventually succeed but at the expense of the Joker killing Robin and escaping to Ethiopia where he meets with Iran’s Khomeini and gets offered to become his ambassador at the United Nations (LOL?!).

Putting politics aside, especially if you Support Hezbollah, “A death in the family” is a fun read and is regarded as one of the highly rated Batman comics. If you are interested in checking it out you can do so in high resolution graphics on the below links:

Short documentary of 1983 Beirut marine barracks bombing

On a day like this 30 years ago, a suicide bomber in a hijacked truck managed to bypass the barriers around the barracks and smashed right into the lobby of the main building before detonating his explosives.

The explosion was so big that it collapsed the building into rubble and killed 305 servicemen.

The video above is a short documentary told by two marine veterans who were serving in Beirut at that time, with footage and photos of the bombing.

Mabrouk Lebanon!

So we did it and defeated Iran tonight!!

Lebanon stunned Iran 1-0 today to claim their first ever win against the regional giants and raise hopes of gaining a shock 2014 FIFA World Cup™ berth.

China-based midfielder Roda Antar headed home a free-kick on 28 minutes for Lebanon’s famous victory, in front of their home fans in Beirut, which lifted them off the bottom of Group A. Source

After playing 4 games we now have 4 points which is as much as Iran and Qatar have, except that they have played 3 games so far and therefore have one game in hand. You can check the standings here.

Our team still has 4 more games remaining with the next one being against Qatar on November 14th.

33 Days now showing in ABC but not in City Mall

Look like there has been an update on the issue of “33 Days” movie being banned at several theaters in Beirut with Carmen Lebbos announcing in an interview on Talk of the Town last night that ABC Achrafieh will start screening it as of this week, while City Mall still have not provided a confirmation whether the movie will be screened at their theaters or not.

With all that fuss being made over the contribution of Iranians in the movie production, imagine the drama that could have been made if this was a 100% Iranian movie!
