Connecting Lebanon to Cyprus with a bridge

Lebanon Cyprus

Beirut Night Life posted about an American company who’s currently proposing a 150Km bridge connecting Dbayeh to Limassol to allow reaching Cyprus from Lebanon (or vice versa) within 80minutes. Using this bridge will be subject to paying a certain fee, and it will be owned by the American company for the 10 years.

Can you imagine how many things can go wrong if this projects gets approved?

  1. No matter how this highway will be designed, Lebanese drivers will always manage to find a way to make a u-turn on it.
  2. Some people will drive for like 20 minutes then park on the side, set their arguileh, and start grilling some meat, because you know, picnic by the sea!
  3. Others will just use it to jump into the sea, because its sides appear to be higher than the sidewalk in Ain El Mraiseh.
  4. After the 10 years pass by, the Lebanese side of the highway will always have potholes.
  5. Zouzou Ebba and the gang will never know where this highway leads to, since they will just use the first few hundred meters of it for racing, then make a u-turn and go back to Dbayeh.
  6. Shall I go on??

Dolphins still appearing near Zouk

Looks like the dolphins that were spotted a while ago are still hanging around our sea. The below photos were posted by Virgin Radio a couple of days ago, with Zouk Power Plant showing in the background of one of them.

Golden owl spotted in Tyre

owl

Following the dolphins that were spotted near Jounieh few months ago, and the seal lion in Tyre last week, workers in Hiram Hospital spotted four golden owls in the hospital’s garden today.

Workers in Hiram Hospital were surprised to spot on Thursday four golden owls in the hospital’s garden in Tyre, noting that this kind of bird is uncommon to the country’s wildlife.

A Golden owl is characterized with far vision, particularly in low light, and is dubbed “cleaner of the environment” and “farmer-friendly” since this bird feeds on rats and insects.

According to some experts, the aforementioned species are coming to Lebanon due to climate change since this phenomenon has a significant direct effect on animals. Source

I wonder what’s coming next!

Kitesurfing in Batroun

Looks pretty cool! It isn’t clear though if there’s some kind of a kitesurfing school there in Batroun or these were just a bunch of pro kitesurfers having fun.

Wickerpark Festival 2012 – When Nature Pokes Back

We’ve got no more sea urchins in our sea, and a group of people decided to do something about it, those are the Wickerpark Festival team.

The first edition of Wickerpark Festival was held last year and was dedicated to raise to raise fund for replanting of trees in collaboration with the ministry of environment. This year, the festival is focusing on repopulating Sea Urchins by working again with the ministry of environment as well as the Marine Biology Center in Batroun, to repopulate urchins in safe waters before releasing them into the sea.

The festival itself will take place in an open-air venue in Batroun right by the sea, and will be held on June 29th & June 30th.

June 29th will include short-film screenings, ecological fairs, artist exhibitions as well as a series of small acoustic sets, while June 30th will include the Music Festival, with the following artists set to perform:

  • Karl Mattar
  • Sae Lis
  • Who Killed Bruce Lee
  • The Flying Circus
  • Zeid & The Wings
  • The Beirut Groove Collective

So here’s your chance to go have fun, listen to some good music, and give back to mother nature while at it!

Unfortunately I still have no idea about the tickets price and where can you get them from, but I’ll be updating the post once I get some additional info.

Update:

Tickets will be available for sale at Librairie Antoine outlets for $30, and will allow you to attend both of the first and second day of the festival.

Wassim Nasser FAILED to break the national record

I earlier posted this video by Saida TV claiming that Wassim Nasser did succeed to break the national national by swimming for 47 kilometers from Saida to Beirut while in fact  he actually failed and will be trying to do it once again next year.

“The weather was not good at all and Wassim [Nasser] was swimming against the wind,” Intanious Naafa, Nasser’s friend and representative, told The Daily Star Monday.

Nasser’s aimed to break a record set by Abdel-Latif Abu al-Hauf for swimming 42 kilometers from the southern city of Sidon to Beirut in the 1960s.

He sought to cover 47 kilometers.

The athlete’s route started from a point parallel to Sidon’s Crusader Castle and ended in Ramlet al-Bayda; 8 kilometers less than his original goal.

“Wassim will increase the distance next year and hopefully achieve his goal,” Naafa said, praising his friend for his persistence and great effort in achieving such a task. Source

Still, reaching Ramlet El-Bayda is still quite impressive!

Wassim Nasser did it!

Congratulations! I bet he’s going to be sleeping for a week now!

Update:

The video turned out to be false. Wassim actually failed to break the record, you can about it here.
