UN Listens – A Chance to Make Our Communities Better

“UN Listens” is one of the latest initiatives by the United Nations in Lebanon, and it aims to engage the Lebanese citizens in making positive change to their communities and environment. For several years now, the work of the UN in our country has been associated with exclusively helping the Syrian refugees, but in fact they’re committed to their development projects for Lebanon and the UN Listens campaign is one example.

The UN is now calling Lebanese citizens to share their ideas on how they can make their communities better through a dedicated website www.unlistens.org, and the the authors of the best 10 letters with the most creative suggestions will have the opportunity to discuss their ideas with UN experts which can assist them realizing solutions for their environment.

So if you feel you lack the necessary support to voice a suggestion that can positively impact your community, make sure to write a letter through the UN Listens website presenting your idea no matter how big or small it is.

The Day Batman Came to Beirut

I was on Reddit the other day when I landed on a thread about an issue of Batman from the 80s titled “A death in the Family” in which Batman pursues the Joker all the way to Beirut and the Bekaa valley!

The story is full of misconceptions about the Lebanese people and relates a lot to the politics back then (and unsurprisingly now as well). In the comic book, Batman and Robin go to Beirut and cooperates with a Mossad agent named Sharmin Rosen in order to stop the Joker from selling a nuclear missile to a “Shiia” terrorist group who intends to use it against Israel. They eventually succeed but at the expense of the Joker killing Robin and escaping to Ethiopia where he meets with Iran’s Khomeini and gets offered to become his ambassador at the United Nations (LOL?!).

Putting politics aside, especially if you Support Hezbollah, “A death in the family” is a fun read and is regarded as one of the highly rated Batman comics. If you are interested in checking it out you can do so in high resolution graphics on the below links:

Also check Claude El Khal’s post about the same comic book story here.

Gebran Bassil busted in New York

Men will always be men, but that’s definitely not valid when you’re representing Lebanon at the United Nations in New York and meeting with the Emirati minister of foreign affairs!

This video below shows Gibran Bassil asking one of his assistants about some woman called “Caroline”, then when the Emirati minister seemed surprised about his question, he responds with a hand gesture that he was asking because she’s so hot and wishes she was present with them in the meeting!

Quite embarrassing I say!

Angelina Jolie is in Lebanon

Angelina Jolie Bekaa 2

According to tweep @sharbelfaraj, Angelina Jolie is currently secretly visiting Lebanon on a humanitarian mission and staying at Cristal Grand Hotel Kadri in Zahle, which explains why the army closed down the roads leading to the hotel.

If the news turns out to be true, it won’t be the first time for Angelina Jolie to visit Lebanon as she already came earlier in September 2012 to meet the Syrian refugees in Bekaa, and it’s quite brave of her to come again given the hard time the country is going through.

Update:

Annahar published today the below photo of Angelina visiting the refugees in Bekaa.

Angelina Jolie in Lebanon

You probably have heard about Angelina Jolie’s visit to Jordan yesterday to meet with the Syrian refugees who are currently living on Jordan-Syria border in order to help focus international attention on them and possibly attract more funding to help them (more here). It turned out that her plans also include visiting the refugees in Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq during the rest of her trip to the region.

Unfortunately no photos/videos have yet surfaced of her visit to the refugees here. The below 2 photos however are of Jolie at the Grand Serail in Beirut as she was addressing the journalists.

Thanks to both of @maytham11 & @ivysblog

Update:

At the Grand Serail.

And here are some photos of her with the refugees in Bekaa.
