Know your e-Rights in Lebanon

cybercrime

I just stumbled upon this quite informative article published last week in Al-Akhbar about e-laws in Lebanon.

I believe it is a must read for everyone since the Cyber Crime Bureau in Lebanon has not been only investigating cyber crimes, but also interrogating people for expressing their opinions on social networks and blogs (such as what happened to bloggers like Abir Ghattas, Imad Bazzi, Gino Raidy, and Rita Kamel), and sometimes for simply just sharing some defaming article.

The article basically tells you what this Cyber Crime Bureau is allowed and not allowed to do, and whether the police have the right to search your electronic devices without a warrant, in addition to providing tips on maintaining privacy when surfing the internet.

Make sure to check it out.

Lebanese journalist/blogger assaulted for taking photos

district s

Make sure to read Habib Battah’s story on how he got physically assaulted yesterday for trying to take photos of the ruins at District S construction site in Beirut downtown.

My chest and wrists still hurt from the arms of the men who tackled me, twisted my hands behind my back, and tried to rip my phone out of my hands this afternoon.

They were enraged because I refused to delete a photo of ancient ruins I shot on their construction site.

“Lock the door,” one of the foreman said earlier today, and moments later the giant doors of the site were sealed. I was surrounded by 5 to 6 men looking at me menacingly–prepared it seemed–to do anything to shut me up.

Unfortunately he was told to just forget about it when he tried to report the incident to the police station, so I hope his post reaches some good people who can take action about it!

L’Oreal ends contract with Najwa Karam for praising Hitler

Three months after Najwa Karam praised Hitler on Talk of the Town with Mona Hamze, it seemed that she did actually pay the price for the statement she made after an American Jewish blogger called Debbie Schlussel contacted L’Oreal to inform them about Najwa Karam’s interview, since she’s one of the brand’s ambassadors, which resulted in putting an end to the contract between the two.
