Stunning Silent Mini Documentary of Beirut in 1921

beirut-1921

I’m a sucker for old photos and videos of Beirut and the below two videos I found on medmem.eu are an absolute gem!

The videos are both silent and were taken in 1921 during the French mandate. The first part shows several areas of Beirut like Saint George, Raouche, and The Grand Serail with brief descriptions in between the different scenes. It was quite interesting to learn from that part that a french aviation line used to connect Lebanon to Europe back then  through seaplanes.

On the other hand, the second part focuses on education institutions at that time with scenes showing USJ univerity and Hotel Dieu hospital among others institutes. Towards the end of it you can also see the Patriarch during that time Elias Peter Hoayek sitting between some officials at College du Sacre-Coeur.

I will be searching to check if there are other related video to this documentary and will definitely be sharing them if I found any.

Aline Lahoud on The Voice France

Lebanese singer Aline Lahoud auditioned on The Voice France last night and had all four judges Florent Pagny, Jennifer, Mika (who’s of Lebanese origins), and Garou turn around to claim her before she decided to join Florent Pagny’s team.

aline lahoud

I’m not and was never a fan of Aline but I believe she gave an impressive performance singing Khidni Maak by her late mother Salwa Katrib. Moreover, I found it quite humble of her to audition for The Voice, while whoever appears once on TV here starts labeling himself as a celebrity, and singing competitions become a no-no for them.

Good luck to you Aline!

Lebanese trader gets fined a record €14m in France

amf

Joseph Raad, a Lebanese stock trader who now works in France, had the largest penalty in the history of France’s market (€14m) imposed on him last week, after being accused of using inside information on the launch of a takeover of SNCF Geodis and making more than €6m in profit back in 2008!

Prior moving to France, Joseph was apparently responsible of the dealing room at Banque du Credit Libanais.

You can read more about the story on Al Jadeed and Compliance Alert.

Jenifer elimnates Anthony Touma from The Voice France

jenifer-the-voice-the-bitch

After making it to late stages in The Voice France, Anthony Touma was eliminated by his coach Jenifer even though he got 59.7% of the public vote, but Jenifer awarded him only 15 points out of 50 while his opponent Olympe got 35 points which was enough for him to qualify to the semi finals.

Anyway, wishing him luck signing with some famous producer now!

The Beirut Rose

Looks like Beirut just earned a rose after its name, and was announced today at the Garden Show 2012 in Beirut Hippodrome!

Beirut rose is from a French rose producer called “Meilland” and will be available in their catalogue all over the world. It will also be available for purchase at their Lebanese agent’s stand in the Garden show, Robinson Agri, till June 2nd. Not sure where can one get it from after the exhibition.
