Beirut Hotel banned in Lebanon?

Danielle Arbid just posted on her Facebook page that her new movie “Beirut Hotel“, which was scheduled to be released on January 19th 2011, will banned because it endangers Lebanon’s security!

I JUST BEEN NOTIFIED THAT MY LATEST FEATURE FILM BEIRUT HOTEL CANNOT BE SHOWN IN LEBANON ! ITS RELEASE IN BEIRUT, ORGINALLY SCHEDULED FOR 19 JANUARY 2012, HAS JUST BEEN CANCELLED. THE CENSORSHIP COMMITTEE ARGUED THAT : “THE FILM WOULD ENDANGER LEBANON’S SECURITY.”
PLEASE SPREAD THE NEWS AND MOBILISE AGAINST MIDDLE AGES CENSORSHIP. I NEED YOUR SUPPORT…

What a shame! As if the irresponsible statements (or farts?) our politicians make don’t endanger Lebanon’s security every single day!

Update (December 12, 2011):

The Daily Star published today that the movie was banned because it mentions the assassination of ex-Prime Minister Rafik Hariri!

Beirut Hotel (بيروت بالليل)

2011 might have started with lousy movies like Sorry Mom, but I guess it’s ending with promising ones. We previously got Nadine Labaki’s “Where do we go now?” late in September, and below is the trailer of a new movie called “Beirut Hotel” or “بيروت بالليل” by Danielle Arbid that I just saw on YouTube. Anyone has an idea if it’ll make it to the Lebanese theaters anytime soon?

One evening, a married young singer Zoha meets the French lawyer Mathieu in a night club in Beirut. Mathieu will become suspected of spying, while Zoha is trying to flee from her husband. Despite these problems, the two will witness a love story for few days mixed with violence and fear.

Sorry Mom – A Lebanese thriller

A Lebanese thriller is soon coming to a theater near you!

The feature tells the story of a severely traumatized woman, after her husband was killed and her son kidnapped. 4 years has passed and her son Fadi is still lost.

Revenge has its own bitter taste and can easily turn into a vicious circle…

“Sorry Mom” is the first installment of a series of thrillers that are expected to be released in the near future.

I usually like to go watch Lebanese movies but several ones ended up as a big disappointment like “Falafel”. Let’s see how good will this one be with all the killing, sex, kidnapping, and betrayal it promises.

Sorry Mom will be released on June 9th.

Typically Lebanese

With a total of 43 Nokia handsets, 5 HTC, 1 Sony, 1 Alcatel, 1 Ericsson, 1 Blackberry, and 1 iPhone, George claims to have owned a total of 53 headsets over the last 13 and a half years! Which means an average of a new phone every 3 months or so.

Very typical Lebanese eh! 😛

On a serious note, all the handsets I’ve owned over the past 13 years were Nokia as well, except for the first one which was a big fat Nokia D160 that used to run on 4 AA rechargeable batteries!

Lebanonizing the sushi experience

If you find the combination of Sushi and Arguileh to be appealing, then Republic in Zalka is probably the place for you.

I went there few days ago and was surprised to see that they have recently added a sushi section to their menu, meaning you can now enjoy having your sushi while puffing smoke rings! 😛

On a serious note, I’m not an Arguileh expert but my friends claim Republic has the best Arguileh in town.

Ahwet Leila to replace Ahwet El Ezez in Gemmayze

After all the rumors (that proved to be wrong later) about the possibility of a bank replacing Ahwet El Ezez in Gemmayze, it turned out it’s actually a 4th branch for Leila that will be replacing the old cafe.

Leila already has 3 branches in ABC Achrafieh, ABC Dbayeh, and Verdun. This new branch will be called “Ahwet Leila” to probably maintain the feel of its predecessor…

Shou ya ashta?

I saw this on the front of a mini-bus 2 days ago in Tarik Al-Jadida, Beirut. I am sure the driver is “Shou ya ashta” style!
