Tamanna making wishes come true

IMG_7830.JPG

This isn’t the first time Tamanna grants a wish for a critically ill kid, and I’ve actually loved each and every video they’ve published so far, but this is the first time I get really moved by one of their videos. Not because of how good the whole thing was executed, but because I have a kid now and I know how awful it feels for parents when their children get sick, even if it was as simple as a stupid flu virus.

The job that Tamanna are doing is absolutely awesome for children suffering from life threatening illnesses. Parents will usually be ready to sacrifice everything in order to see their kids getting better, and Tamanna is going the extra mile for them by drawing a smile on these kids faces and fulfilling their wishes.

The video below is of Ghassan, a 5 year-old cancer survivor, who wished to star in an action packed movie.

Needless to say, Tamanna is one of the organizations that deserves to be donated to, and you can do so by going to their donations page here.

NSFW – 1973 Liberality VS 2014 Rigorism in Lebanon

I just stumbled upon this old scene from a 1973 Lebanese movie and quickly recalled AlJoumohouri’a article yesterday bashing the beach parties at C-Flow Jbeil.

I found it really funny that back in the ’70s it was quite normal for Lebanese actors to french kiss in movies and even perform erotic scenes, while Beirut also had licensed brothels and our newspapers used to advertise vibrators!

Fast forward 40 years, sex toys are banned from the Lebanese market, we make a fuss in the press every time a couple of actors kiss on TV, and then comes a journalist from Al-Joumhouria criticizing the beach parties at C-Flow Jbeil which caters for adults only!!

I don’t want to imagine what’s coming next in another 40 years time!

The Wolf of Wall Street no longer censored in Lebanon

imagesCAO479S1

You probably already know that The Wolf of Wall Street has been censored in Lebanon since whoever imported it thought we will not have the attention span for a three hours movie, and therefore it was cut down to two hours and thirty minutes!

However, it was announced on Radio One Lebanon this morning that the movie will no longer be censored and the full version will start showing as of today. I really hope this will be true because I was preferring to wait for the DVD release to watch the full movie!

For more about The wolf of Wall Street, you can read Anis Tabet’s review about it here.

New Lebanese movie – Habbet Loulou

In modern day Lebanon, in a country divided between those who have too little and those who have too much, three women try to defy their social labeling and incapability. “Habbet Loulou” is a story about illegitimate children, prostitution, and abortion. A heartfelt tale that streams from the veins running under the very streets of Lebanon.

Habbet Loulou is a new movie by Layal Rajha and will be out in cinemas on September 26th. You can check this Facebook page for more information about it.

Betroit – A new Lebanese movie by Adel Serhan

Betroit

Betroit is a new Lebanese movie by Adel Serhan that was filmed in Beirut and Detroit. It will start showing in Lebanese cinemas on March 3rd 2013.

Betroit, written and directed by Adel Serhan, is a portrayal of three couples as their lives become intertwined with one another. An act of violence disturbs the lives of the group and they come to realize how precious love and family can be. Leila (Darine Hamze) tries to escape from her abusive husband (Hassan Farhat) in hopes of fleeing to Detroit, where her sister Rola (Christine Solomon) lives. Lisa is desperately seeking a divorce from her husband Sam (Derek Kelly) in order to pursue a Hollywood career. She claims her husband physically abuses her in order to get Sam deported from the States. Rola, who is married to a successful lawyer Joe (Tamer Werfalli), both strives to help their friend Sam (Derek Kelly) and her sister’s marriage while struggling to have a baby of their own. Betroit addresses issues of domestic violence, culture, love and relationships between both the American and Middle Eastern culturet.

Ossit Sawani / Blind Intersections

ossit sawani - blind intersections

I was lucky to attend the press screening of the new Lebanese movie Ossit Sawani (Blind Intersections) at Sofil last week.

For a change, this movie doesn’t tell a story from the Lebanese civil war, nor does it suggest a solution for sectarianism in Lebanon. It actually follows three characters, Nour who loses her parents in a car accident and gets into financial problems, India, a rich woman who dreams of having a baby, and Marwan, a 12 year-old kid who lives with a violent alcoholic mother. These three characters obviously come from different backgrounds and never meet throughout the movie, but the effects of one incident will alter the lives of them all. Don’t expect any happy ending, since Ossit Sawani just portrays the daily struggles of Nour, India and Marwan.

I’m not sure how accurate my judgement about Ossit Sawani will be since I’m no movie expert. Anyway, I believe it’s good enough to watch even though the transition from one scene to another was not so smooth at the beginning of the movie but got better as the movie went forward, moreover, I believe some scenes could have been cut shorter. Still the movie is worth the ticket price and eventually supporting its producers.

Ossit Sawani is by the way directed by Lara Saba and produced by Nibal Arakji, and started showing in cinemas as of yesterday.
