  • Our Silliest Record Breaking Attempt to Date

    20160727_073915

Earlier last week, a friend told me that the organizers of BIAF (Beirut International Awards Festival) are planning to lay down the world’s longest red carpet as part of their 2-day event. The red carpet is expected to start somewhere in Hamra, then goes towards Achrafieh and all the way through downtown to Zaytouna Bay where the ceremony is taking place.

At first I was mainly concerned about the traffic jam this red carpet will be causing on a weekday. But after spotting parts of it on my way to work this morning, I think the traffic jam is absolutely not a problem compared to how hideous it looks!

The thing doesn’t qualify as a red carpet. It’s barely a piece of red cloth, and it seems that some genius decided to lay it down last night and cars eventually ended up tearing it down.

The end result is needless to say, bahdaleh. I wish all the money that was put into this silly attempt to make it into the Guinness Book was allocated for something more meaningful, like helping Rozine get that liver transplant maybe!

  • Wassim Nasser breaks Lebanon’s long distance swimming record

Following his failure to break Lebanon’s long distance swimming record last year, Wassim Nasser broke that record yesterday by completing a 45Km swim from Beirut to Amchit!

The previous record was held by Abdel-Latif Abu al-Hauf who swam 42Km back in the 1960s.

  • Red Bull Stratos Mission

Watch Felix Baumgartner going supersonic while attempting the highest sky-dive ever from an altitude of 37km over New Mexico. (More about this mission here)

He’ll be jumping in around 30 minutes from the time of publishing this post and you can watch him live on the below YouTube channel or on Red Bull Stratos website.

It definitely has nothing to do with Tabbouleh and Falafel, but this record setting attempt is definitely worth watching!

    Update:

The mission has unfortunately been delayed till 8:30PM Beirut time due to the weather conditions. You can follow the Red Bull Stratos website for any updates.

  • Wassim Nasser FAILED to break the national record

I earlier posted this video by Saida TV claiming that Wassim Nasser did succeed to break the national record by swimming for 47 kilometers from Saida to Beirut while in fact  he actually failed and will be trying to do it once again next year.

“The weather was not good at all and Wassim [Nasser] was swimming against the wind,” Intanious Naafa, Nasser’s friend and representative, told The Daily Star Monday.

Nasser’s aimed to break a record set by Abdel-Latif Abu al-Hauf for swimming 42 kilometers from the southern city of Sidon to Beirut in the 1960s.

He sought to cover 47 kilometers.

The athlete’s route started from a point parallel to Sidon’s Crusader Castle and ended in Ramlet al-Bayda; 8 kilometers less than his original goal.

“Wassim will increase the distance next year and hopefully achieve his goal,” Naafa said, praising his friend for his persistence and great effort in achieving such a task. Source

Still, reaching Ramlet El-Bayda is still quite impressive!

  • Wassim Nasser did it!

Congratulations! I bet he’s going to be sleeping for a week now!

    Update:

The video turned out to be false. Wassim actually failed to break the record, you can read more about it here.

  • Wassim Nasser attempts swimming from Saida to Beirut

Wassim Nasser, a Lebanese swimmer, is trying to swim 47 kilometers from Saida to Beirut in an attempt to break a national record that was set back in 1960 by Abdel-Latif Abu Al-Hauf who swam 42 kilometers.

According to The Daily Star, Wassim’s journey is expected to take around 11 hours, but it wasn’t clear at what time exactly did he start his trip. Anyway, you can read more about his attempt here.

  • World’s largest cup of Batrouni lemonade

After Kebbe, Tabbouleh, Hommus, and Falafel, here comes the turn for Lemonade! According to this event on Facebook, the traders association in Batroun is set on breaking Guinness world record for the largest cup of lemonade by making more than 5000 liters of lemonade!

The event will be held on July 8th starting 10AM, and the target will be to squeeze more than 2 tons of lemon by 200 people. The current record is 4593.7 liters and is held by some Chinese district.

I’m guessing it’ll be very easy to cheat with breaking this record since you can add as much water as you want to the squeezed lemonade if you end up short on liters! Anyway, I thought we’re already done with the record breaking frenzy, but it doesn’t seem so.

  • Yet another Guinness world record: Longest bar in Jounieh

This madness doesn’t seem like ending anytime soon, now we’re all set to break the Guinness record for the world’s longest bar. The event is happening on the 31st of August in Jounieh’s Old Souk, and tickets will be sold for 30$ including 2 drinks in all Jounieh pubs starting Thursday.

    Check here for more details.
