Fayha Choir on Arabs’ Got Talent

Great performance by The Fayha Choir on Arab’s Got Yalent!

The FAYHA CHOIR, established since 2003, and conducted ever since by Maestro Barkev Taslakian, is sponsored by Safadi Foundation and Azm & Saada association. It supports the choir financially and morally, which helps it to improve and perform at its best, locally or internationally. The choir is composed of nearly 50 males and females members, from Tripoli and suburbs citizens, who represent the Lebanese population with all its religions, social, political, economical affiliations. The choir’s repertoire includes Lebanese, oriental, as well as French, English, Latin, Armenian and other songs. This diversity reflects the choir’s openness to the human heritage.

Thank you Nour!

Future Movement demonstrators attacking the press

Via Now Lebanon

Shocking video coming in from news outlets today shows angry demonstrators in Tripoli attacking the press.

The first video shows rioters pushing against a news truck and attempting to tear down the satellite on top.

The video below it shows a vehicle (allegedly belonging to Al-Jazeera news) being set on fire.

Demonstrators also torched the mopeds of other media outlets, according to AFP.

Ramadan in Tripoli

Tripoli is one of the cities that I personally can never get bored of. I was there last Sunday and about to come back to Beirut at around 3:00PM when I decided to waste some additional time at any random souk since there was still plenty of time till Iftar.

And so I went to Al Tall souk (the same one I previously visited) to see how does it look like now in Ramadan. Needless to say, I was encountering sweets and juice vendors everywhere in the small souk, in addition to huge stocks of vegetables in the small stores since everyone gets crazy about buying them in Ramadan, and of course the place was much crowded than last time.

The guy in the left image is selling Kharroub, a sour juice that I disliked a LOT! While on the right image the guy is selling Moghrabiyyeh platters for 3,000 L.L only!

My next stop was at Abdel Sattar Al Tom sweets in Al Zahriyyeh.

Maamoul bi ashta, Kneifeh bi ashta, and Mafroukeh! *Yummy*

Across the street from Al Tom, there’s anther shop that sells almost all kind of kaak and bread. My favorite is the kaak that can be grilled with cheese stuffed inside (it’s called Alleeta there) which can be the best souhour in Ramadan!

I might be going to Tripoli again next week and probably the week after, what other places do you recommend that I go visit?

Overdoing the World Cup 2010 – II

I was in Tripoli last Saturday on the way to El-Mina when I spotted this building covered with German flags on all sides! And obviously that fanatic supporter Rabah Assafiri is so proud of himself that he’s even displaying his name on a flag for Bayern Munich… probably to get attention? He got mine at least.

There’s probably more flags on this building than on Berlin’s presidential palace!

Freeze Tripoli Old Souks! I will shoot you!

It’s been a long time since I last “freezed and shot” a place! The photos below were taken back in December 2009, but for some reason they sit for a long time in my hard drive before getting published!

Anyway, this episode of “Freeze I will shoot you” is brought to you from one of Tripoli’s old souks (Souk El-Attarin?). I was surprised to encounter such place in Tripoli, it somehow resembled to some souks I’ve been to in Syria.

This souk is relatively small and crowded, but it is unique and definitely worth a visit next time you go to Tripoli!

What Rami says:

What I liked:

  • Their friendly online customer service agent. I had a chat with them today pretending to be a customer and they were very helpful.
  • The links on the left that make it easy on you to reach what you need to order based on your budget, occasion, theme, or recipient.
  • They have an actual showroom unlike other Lebanese flowers & gifts websites.

What I disliked:

  • Their blog, the posts are not related at all to each other. One post for example is about artificial rain! It should be used to communicate more with the readers. Maybe update them on the upcoming products.
  • The overall design of the website. I am no design expert, but I think there’s room for improvement in the website layout.

Toastmasters Lebanon

Toastmasters International is a nonprofit educational organization that operates clubs worldwide for the purpose of helping members improve their communication, public speaking and leadership skills. Through its thousands of member clubs, Toastmasters International offers a program of communication and leadership projects designed to help men and women learn the arts of speaking, listening, and thinking.

There are actually two toastmasters clubs in Lebanon, one is in Beirut and the other in Tripoli. And I got introduced to Toastmasters Lebanon a while ago via Nour’s blog “Sunken Treasure 6”. Nour is a member of Tripoli’s club and she posts frequent updates on her blog about what goes on in the meetings and sometimes shares with the tables topics that she’s going to be speaking about.

Per my readings of her blog posts, Toastmasters evaluation system helps the individuals identify the weaknesses in their communication skills and of course work on improving them. One thing I have been wondering about though is when do members decide that they got enough practice and no longer need what Toastmasters offers and thus choose to just stop attending. I think Nour can answer this by commenting on the post!

Anyway, you can get to know more about Toastmaster Tripoli through the below reportage by Mounzer Al-Merehbi which was aired on TeleLiban few days ago.
